Business Resources
Business is the lifeblood of the economy. In a generalized way, business facilities the transfer of value between entities.
It could be value transferred from person to person, such as a consignment auction house. Or it could be a B2B (business to business) transfer of value, such as a wholesaler purchasing products from a manufacturer and selling them to distributors. Jump to business article list.
How a Business Works
A business takes resources, such as capital, manpower, and materials, and manages those to produce goods or services. Consumers, which could be individuals, governments, or other businesses, then purchase those goods and services. If the business is efficient at managing the resources, it can get more income from the sales of the goods and products than what it spends to produce them. This difference is called profit, or, if it is negative, a loss.
Managing Business Risk
An important part of any business is managing risk. The management of a business must be able to identify, and, where possible, mitigate risks. Business face risks every day. A supplier might miss the promised delivery for automotive parts, thus causing a car manufacturer to miss promised deliveries to dealers, who might have already promised the cars to customers.
Contingency Planning to Manage Business Risks
One method of managing business risks is to have a contingency plan. In our example of the automaker above, their contingency plan could have accounted for late parts deliveries from the supplier. An alternate supplier could have been on standby, or a spare stock of parts could be kept on the shelf. Managing risk always involves compromises, because keeping extra parts on the shelf could reduce risk exposure due to late supplier deliveries, but carrying extra inventory ties up valuable business capital.
